Imagine a future where surgery doesn’t mean being cut open. Instead, a tiny incision allows a fine wire to perform complex procedures inside the body. This is the reality of Interventional Radiology (IR), a groundbreaking field our Dr. Allison McKay is advancing alongside a team at Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam. Together, they’re bringing this minimally invasive miracle to over 60 million people in Tanzania and beyond.

What Is Interventional Radiology?

Interventional radiology involves:

  • Minimally invasive procedures: IR enables patients to recover swiftly and resume their daily routines.
  • Avoiding large incisions: IR techniques utilize advanced imaging technologies to navigate through the body with precision.
  • Treating diseases through tiny pinholes: IR treats ailments through small incisions, reducing trauma and facilitating same-day procedures.

The Birth of a Vision: Road2IR

Six years ago, Tanzania, home to over 60 million people, confronted a significant challenge: there were no interventional radiologists available to meet the nation’s medical needs. This prompted the creation of Road2IR, a training program aimed at empowering local medical practitioners with the skills and knowledge necessary to perform IR procedures independently.

60 Million People

How Road2IR Is Different

Unlike traditional aid initiatives, Road2IR focuses on sustainability. Instead of flying in medical practitioners who leave after completing their work, Road2IR focuses on bringing in experts from around the world to train Tanzanian healthcare professionals, allowing them to gain the skills to continue to use IR after their departure.

The Impact of Road2IR

In the years since its founding, Road2IR has had a profound impact in Tanzania by doing the following:

  • Training over 100 local healthcare professionals in IR techniques.
  • Conducting numerous successful IR procedures, ranging from tumor ablations to vascular interventions.
  • Establishing sustainable infrastructure for ongoing IR training and practice in Tanzania.
  • Enhancing local healthcare capacity, leading to improved patient outcomes and reduced healthcare disparities.
